The battles themselves are an onslaught, requiring the player to constantly scan the environment and manage enemy types smartly. While the circle strafing is absent, unending steams of enemies will pour in from various elevations in a 180 degree arc in front of Sam. The stages themselves do have a bit of the classic Serious Sam feel. Still, any of these weapons are an improvement over the pea shooter-like default laser pistols. Sadly, the cannon did not turn up during play time. Most of the classics are here, from the mechanical rocket launcher, minigun, and double barreled shotgun. In the store, health and ammo can be topped off, and new weaponry can be procured. These breaks also provide a chance to beef up Sam’s arsenal by going shopping. What actually happens is that Sam is stationary, mowing down a seemingly never ending stream of enemies until the stage is complete.Įach mission consists of four of these stages, and serve as a chance to change the environment. A prime example of this is escorting an unseen archaeologist. From a home base in orbit, the player selects a mission and heads planet side to complete it. Sam ‘Serious’ Stone is pretty much considered that last chance to save the world, kick the aliens out, build a wall, and make the aliens pay for it. Earth has been invaded and its denizens are on the brink of total defeat.

Not that story has ever had much to do with these games, but there is a bit of a plot here. Croteam and Devolver Digital have recently went guns akimbo into the fray with the Early Access release of Serious Sam VR: The Last Hope. Some games have failed on both fronts while others absolutely show the value of a good set, offering glimmers of things to come.

Tons of independent developers have been throwing their hat into the ring, trying to figure out how to make the most of the technology while still keeping the experience from increasing the profits of carpet cleaning companies by driving up demand for their services. The virtual reality titles that are permeating the marketplace tend to emphasize the infancy of the hardware.
